Requirements to obtain the DUI abroad

The Online Appointment Request for DUI is free of charge, all you need is an internet connection and schedule your appointment through the Appointment Portal https://portalcitas.rree.gob.sv/.

Requirements for DUI Issuance – First Time

Identity Documents

Present the original of one or more of the following documents:

  • Personal Identity Card.
  • Election Card.
  • Original Passport, including from another country (valid), indicating Salvadoran nationality. Provisional passports will not be accepted.
  • Valid Driver’s License from El Salvador or country of residence.
  • Certification of the personal identity card record.
  • Card issued by the General Directorate of Migration and Aliens of El Salvador.
  • Valid permanent residence card with photo (New Edition) (I-151 or I-551), valid temporary residence card (New Edition) (I-688), valid work authorization card (I-688A), valid travel document for refugees (I-151 or I-551), valid work authorization document issued by the Immigration Service, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, Other documents issued by authorities abroad.

Note: In case of not having any of the aforementioned identity documents, the applicant must be identified with 2 Salvadoran witnesses who know him/her, and for those who are 18 years old, they can be identified with either of their parents, who must have a valid DUI and accompany the applicant at the time of processing the DUI.

Certifications

Present any of the following certifications:

  • Certified copy of Birth Certificate, complying with legal requirements (issued less than 1 year ago).
  • Certification of naturalization record authenticated by a notary or by the General Directorate of Migration and Aliens in the case of naturalized foreigners.
  • Certification of the resolution or judgment of the Ministry of the Interior, granting or recognizing naturalization.

Payment Receipt

  • Payment of the DUI issuance fee (US$35.00) to be made at the Consulate on the day of the appointment.

Requirements for DUI Data Modification

Identity Documents

  • You must provide and present the relevant documentation supporting the change to be made.

Family Status

  • For MARRIAGE: Birth certificate properly annotated with the acquired family status or Marriage certificate.
  • For DIVORCE: Birth certificate annotated with the acquired family status, or Divorce certificate.
  • For WIDOWHOOD: Birth certificate annotated with the acquired family status, or Death certificate of the spouse.
  • For rectification in the birth certificate (errors or omissions in the certificate): Birth certificate annotated with the respective rectification.

Names

  • For SOCIAL NAMES: Birth certificate annotated with the established name.
  • For CHANGE OF NAMES/SURNAMES: Birth certificate with the respective annotation.
  • For POSTERIOR RECOGNITION: New birth certificate.

Others

  • For PROFESSION: Original and photocopy of diploma or degree certificate, or authorization certifying the exercise of the profession.

Payment Receipt

  • Payment of the DUI issuance fee (US$35.00) to be made at the Consulate on the day of the appointment.

DUI Renewal Procedure

Identity Documents

  • Original Documento Único de Identidad (DUI), which will be retained.

Supporting Documents for the Application

  • If the citizen requests a modification to the DUI, they must provide and present the relevant documentation supporting the change to be made.

Family Status

  • For MARRIAGE: Birth certificate properly annotated with the acquired family status or Marriage certificate.
  • For DIVORCE: Birth certificate annotated with the acquired family status, or Divorce certificate.
  • For WIDOWHOOD: Birth certificate annotated with the acquired family status, or Death certificate of the spouse.
  • For rectification in the birth certificate (errors or omissions in the certificate): Birth certificate annotated with the respective rectification.

Names

  • For SOCIAL NAMES: Birth certificate annotated with the established name.
  • For CHANGE OF NAMES/SURNAMES: Birth certificate with the respective annotation.
  • For POSTERIOR RECOGNITION: New birth certificate.

Others

  • For PROFESSION: Original and photocopy of diploma or degree certificate, or authorization certifying the exercise of the profession.

DUI Replacement Procedure

Identity Documents

  • If the replacement is due to deterioration: Original Documento Único de Identidad (DUI), which will be retained.

Supporting Documents for the Application
